POST SCRIPTUM: I had already been working in New York’s cultural sector as a graphic designer for 10 years, and the idea for gender talents had been brewing for several. I had already known felix Burrichter of pin—up magazine socially, and had arranged to meet with him to show my work. the meeting went ok, but i could tell he wasn’t too impressed so at the very end i wagered to share with him the idea for gender talents. it wasn’t until then that his eyes really lit up. i was unsure and he insisted that do it and offered me his table at the new york art book fair to launch the project so long as i repped pin—up, which was easy because i was a huge fan. the event was three months away so i had to pull it together pretty quickly, but i managed to throw together a preview edition of 100 copies, paid for out of pocket from the money i got when i sold my share of this is our work back to my former partner. the edition sold out. I doubt that i broke even, but looking back it this feels like the point where my career started to get interesting. where i began the make contributions to my community that felt meaningful by creating something i could not find. the course of my life was altered by felix’s generosity and entusiasm. i learned so many things from the experience of bringing this publication into fruition but perhaps the most significant was that history is not just a series of events, its also a series of gaps. when you begin to see this inverted cultural landscape everything changes.
